Zanzibar Expands Mineral Exploration, Creating New Investment Opportunities
Zanzibar continues to strengthen its position as one of East Africa's fastest-growing investment destinations, with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar announcing significant progress in the development of the island's mining sector. A preliminary feasibility study on Zanzibar's mineral resources has now been completed, marking an important milestone in the government's long-term strategy to diversify the economy and attract both local and international investors. The announcement was made during the launch of the Seventh Tanzania Mining and Investment Conference (TMIC 2026), which will take place in Dar es Salaam from 19–21 November 2026. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals, Ali Hassan Mrisho confirmed that the government is laying a strong foundation for sustainable mineral development through scientific research, strategic planning, and responsible resource management. The preliminary study, conducted in partnership with the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), identified promising mineral potential across Zanzibar. The next phase will focus on advanced geological exploration to determine commercially viable opportunities while ensuring environmentally responsible development. According to government officials, early geological assessments indicate the presence of valuable heavy mineral sands, including ilmenite and zircon—two minerals widely used in construction, manufacturing, and various industrial applications worldwide. Supporting Zanzibar's Long-Term Economic Growth The government has emphasized that future mining projects will be developed in line with Zanzibar's sustainable development strategy, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility and long-term benefits for local communities. Participation in TMIC 2026 also reflects Zanzibar's commitment to strengthening relationships with international investors, promoting knowledge exchange, and showcasing the island's expanding investment potential across multiple sectors. A Stronger Economy Creates New Investment Potential The continued expansion of Zanzibar's economy extends far beyond mining. Alongside record growth in tourism, infrastructure, and real estate development, the mining industry is expected to become another important pillar supporting long-term economic diversification. As new industries emerge and foreign investment continues to increase, demand for residential, commercial, and hospitality developments is expected to grow, further strengthening Zanzibar's real estate market and creating additional opportunities for property investors. At MB Homes, we closely monitor the economic trends shaping Zanzibar's future. From infrastructure and tourism to real estate and new industries, we provide valuable insights into the developments that continue to position Zanzibar as one of Africa's most promising destinations for investment and sustainable growth.
